Constantly looking back at my past mistakes? I’m DONEAfter nearly 27 years of sobriety, I’ve decided to switch up my "Active" Recovery Journey strategy completely.Here’s why I’m done with constantly looking back at my past mistakes in active addiction:Whenever someone brings up my past and throws it in my face, I think that this person is stuck in the past. It has nothing to do with me. I’ve made amends to 99% of the people I've harmed. There are only one or two people I have yet to apologize to. One person is impossible, and the other has not responded to my messages. So when people throw my past in my face, I pray for them because it feels like they are stuck in the past and cannot overcome what they are dealing with.What I think happens in life is that when we are young, we get free reign to live any way we want at the expense of others. Then we grow up, and there is a bit of a lull. Then we hit mid-life and hit our "Crisis." To me, this mid-life crisis in recovery from substance use is being held accountable for all the mistakes we made in our addiction. If we survive this, like Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings once said, "I pass the test. I will diminish, go into the West, and remain Galadriel." This is what happens in our mid-life substance use recovery life. We have to face all the demons we created in the past. If we do, we will enter another level of supernatural presence that Alcoholics Anonymous called "The Fourth Dimension."Today, whenever someone throws my past in my face, I use it as a constant reminder of how far I have come in my journey. I can barely remember what my life was like, but as long as I stay away from the first drink and do not entertain the relapse thoughts for very long, I will be ok. As long as I let God guide my path, he will make my way straight. My recovery journey is dependent on my faith in God. Even though I do not show it, I have a lot of faith.Instead, I’ve decided to focus on the gifts God has given me and to continue to do good.So far, so good. I've already achieved 27 continuous years of sobriety as of July 28, 2023. I live mortgage-free and have achieved some goals I have been working for over 20 years to achieve. I have a master's degree, and the society I work for is obtaining some funding so I can share my experience, strength, and hope. My spiritual walk with God has deepened over the past 20 years, and I am closer to being financially independent. On August 5, my wife and I will celebrate 23 years of marriage. I want other Indigenous Peoples of Canada to achieve this, primarily by being financially independent. The different paths are mostly mine.
