It was 2015, and I found myself at a crossroads. I just finished working for 14 years with an organization where I did 7 years of alcohol and drug counseling on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, BC, Canada, and an additional 7 years of managing up to 4 programs and 8 staff. I probably preferred being a counselor, but I was urged to become a manager. I did it for the experience.This experience has helped me build this society into what it is today. I am forever grateful for all of the past experiences I have had. I have tons of memories of all the events we hosted and all the people we met. I tried to help as many people as I could with the resources I had. It felt great, but there is only so much leadership a person can do without burning out. I look back on those years and often ask myself, "Would I change anything if I had to do it all over again? The answer is "no."
