"I can do it on my own, I don’t need anybody."This is an alcoholic’s motto, and that’s what I used to tell myself.Fast forward twenty-five years of "Active" sobriety later, and I needed help!Even though I wanted to believe I could do it on my own, I had zero momentum.I finally had to admit that I felt overwhelmed and frustrated and had no idea what to do next. Basically, I got frustrated enough to throw in the towel and hire a mentor, or probably even a business coach.And I’m so glad I did!Working with a mentor or business coach has helped me identify my goals and needs. He is an excellent researcher. He has helped me review my qualifications and expertise, which has helped me refine my goals and narrow my focus. I have learned many things about the way government and grant funding work. I have learned the steps necessary to take to ensure fund spending is maximized and leveraged to continue generating more revenue, which is greatly needed as a business and as a society.Here are seven lessons I learned from that experience:#1: Objective perspective - He has helped me gain insights into business aspects that I have not considered, which has helped me identify potential blind spots, overcome challenges, and capitalize on opportunities as they arise.#2: Strategic guidance - I now have a strategic vision for this organization. I have clear goals with actionable plans. This has greatly helped with decision-making.#3: Skill development - I have grown exponentially in my leadership and management skills. I now have the tools necessary to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, build teams, and other business skills needed to be successful.#4: Accountability and motivation - Being accountable in business is challenging, but I am starting to learn what is needed for organizations to remain viable. &nbsp;Together, we have overcome many obstacles and challenges while maintaining focus.#5: Network expansion - Synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Each of our network circles has grown immensely. We have met many valuable contacts within this industry and would like to continue to work together. We have connected with many people, collaborated, and discussed partnerships.#6: Increased self-awareness - I have grown more and more aware of the need and value of the work we are doing to help those who are less fortunate, especially those who suffer from substance use. I have begun to identify my strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. So I have grown both personally and professionally.#7: Faster results - I have been doing this on my own for the past 7 years. Since we have been working together over the last 3 years, our growth has accelerated. We have achieved results together more efficiently. I am trying to avoid common pitfalls and creating online courses for others after us to avoid common pitfalls as well. I have learned so much over the last few years, not only about business but also about equipping oneself to succeed.
