"I don't have time.""I'm too young or old.""I don't know where to start."I hear these types of excuses all the time!And when I hear them, what I really hear you saying is, "I'm afraid that I won't succeed."But you'll never get to where you truly want to be if you continue to make excuses.Instead, start making solutions.Here are the four biggest excuses people make when it comes to changing their addictive habits:<ol><li>Fear of the unknown - As a 60’s Scoop survivor, I know change can be frightening. Once we get used to something, we do not want it to change because this is what happened in the past. Once we transition to "Active" recovery, this will become our new normal.</li><li>Belief We cannot teach an old dog new tricks - Although this is somewhat true, we believe one never stops learning when it comes to living a life free from substance use. We printed a list of all the disciplines in which a person can pursue an education. The list was two pages long with two columns. Any one of these line items can take ten years to obtain a doctor's degree. There is a lot to learn in recovery.</li><li>We do not know how to change - This is very true in the first few years of sobriety. I did not know what I was doing. It took a long time to figure things out. Like the literature says, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. I took the slow route, but we want to help you take the fast route.</li><li>It takes too much effort - This is one of the few true excuses. The other three have more internal barriers. Change is frightening, but transitioning from active addictions into "Active" recovery is definitely worth the effort.
