I absolutely love being a true “recovery warrior” and wouldn't trade it for the world. The interdependence, the financial blessings, the thrill of landing a big contract, and knowing that I'm making my own tracks—it's pure gold.But along with the thrill have come some dark times.Most of them related to money and wondering when my next paycheck was coming in, if ever. Yikes, just seeing that makes my heart jump.Honestly, I'd trade those times in a hot minute!The absolute darkest of dark times was when... I just finished working for an organization for 14 years, and they called me into the head office and said, “Resign or you'll be fired." I just finished building an awesome health unit program that started to mean something in the community. I was an alcohol and drug counsellor for seven years on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, and then I managed four alcohol and drug programs for an additional 7 or 8 years.Approximately two weeks after I was fired, they were awarded a huge million-dollar contract and were to hire an additional nine staff members.So, my wife and I had two mortgages but only one income. My dreams and goals faded from my sight. There was not a soul around that helped me. My wife went to work, and I was truly alone.
