Listen, having professional services is important to get into “active” recovery. But as the old saying goes, it's not what you know but who you know.
I’m completely fed up with experts telling you you have to go to meetings, you have to do the steps, you have to join a home group, and if you don’t, well, then you might as well not get into recovery. Did these individuals attend their own meetings? Did they join a home group? Did they get a sponsor who guided them accurately through the steps?
It's true! I believe people need to do the steps thoroughly and honestly. That's exactly what my sponsor taught me in the Big Book. He said people who do not recover cannot be honest with themselves. He also said that rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoughtfully followed our path. So he said that when doing the steps, we need to be thorough and honest.
Some organizations adopt the 12 steps, but they rush them through at a dizzying pace and make the steps so convoluted that they lose their impact. What needs to happen is a spiritual awakening. If done thoroughly and honestly, recovery is possible. I would approach counsellors who have had a spiritual awakening, who have done the work, and who now live a new life with a new code of behaviour and just want to help others achieve the same thing.
You can find one thing that works and keep doing it. Lean on it and master it. If that's going to be a 12-step meeting, great. If that's achieving the same thing by going to Wellbriety, awesome. If you do some of the steps at Sweatlodge with the same results of having a spiritual awakening, super.
Don't ever feel like you have to chase what others are doing or what others tell you to do. You are already reclaiming your life, and you've already found something that works. You can tell how much self-work a person has done by how you feel about yourself around them. Do you not feel good about yourself inside when you are around them? If not, this could be an indicator that they have not done their own healing. If people spread nothing but hate and gossip, how healthy are they? This worries me, which is made worse if they are in the “helping” profession because we can only give away what we have. If they have not had a spiritual awakening, what are they giving away?
