If you know there will be alcohol at a party, plan to go for a walk or go to a meeting instead. If you are tempted to drink, have a list of distractions ready to go, like call a friend, go for a walk, or watch a movie. It is also important to be honest with your friends and family about your recovery. Let them know what you need and what you don't. For example, if you don't want to be around alcohol, let them know and ask them to not drink around you. And if you need to leave a party or event early, let them know that too. The most important thing is to stay focused on your recovery and don't let the holidays become a temptation. Take it one day at a time and know that you can do this.
