Don't you love how friends and family have no problem telling you exactly what they think you should do with your business, even when you don't ask?My wife is notorious for that. I remember being excited to take part in a public speaking workshop, and she joined. I later learned that the workshop was not her thing. I was disappointed, but I understood."Who asked YOU? was my first thought, followed by, "You should try it and see how easy it is! "Now, if she had said something like that even 10 years ago, I would have held on to your comments for a long time, probably tossing and turning at night, questioning my self-worth and whether I was really any good at leading people who want to get into recovery to water.But I’m more confident today. And I've learned to take these kinds of comments in stride and not let them bother me too much. This skill took years to develop. You will develop it over time if you work at it.Should I allow another person’s discouragement to hinder me? Should I let someone’s lack of enthusiasm for the work I do stop me from doing it? I'm sure it won't hurt! So I'll try it.But I don’t take criticism as a personal attack anymore. When people give unsolicited advice like that, I know that’s their issue, not mine. What I really want to do is have differing opinions while still seeing each other's point of view.I'm able to look at it objectively to see if there's anything I want to change and act accordingly. Woo!How do you deal with criticism in your recovery journey?
