I believe when people start their recovery journey, they start with big dreams. In our addictions, we wanted freedom. Maybe that is why we drank—to escape our everyday lives or our traumas? Then, when we get into recovery, we want the house, the car, the "model" wife, our life savings, and the freedom to travel. So we get into recovery, and what happens is that we can’t find a place to live; no one wants us; we are broke and in debt, and it feels like we have absolutely no freedom. We ask ourselves why we aren’t growing faster; we want quick fixes to all our problems. We think that stopping drinking or doing drugs is the cause of all our problems, and when we put the drink down or move away from the drugs, all our problems will disappear. This is not the case. When we stop drinking or doing drugs, that is when the problems actually begin."Active" recovery requires soul-searching and going deeper than you may want.
